Last Days of Summer Vacation

It's hard to believe that a new school year is upon us. Summer has flown by quickly! Gone are the days of the pool, and soon our shorts and flip-flops will be replaced by jeans, leggings, sweaters and boots.

This past school year has been one of mainly downs for me, with a few ups. As Brianna would say, " 'the pit and the peach' ". Pits we know are bad, and peaches are better.

My pits have been being a teacher at a center I loved, and losing the position due to gossip and lack of support regarding a challenging behavior from administration, and getting forced by this center to take a support staff position. (I knew why I was demoted to support staff, and the main reason why is due to the lack of support from a director who not only did not help me as part of the job description, she ignored my calls for help and administration allowed her to treat me this way.) I had the support of every teacher in the center with the exception of my own co-teacher. Worse yet, she kept her position, despite her lack of professionalism and actual education. Friendship does not equal qualifications, but hard work does. I worked harder than this director to get my degree and she gets handed her position as director due to friendship with another director. Seriously?

Moving on from that center, I accepted a position as a center director at a different center and did a good job with no training as director. The owner of this center may say something different, as she speaks ill of all her former directors, when it is the owner ultimately responsible for the success of the center. The owner refused to work in a partnership with me, and thus the center was closed for licensing violations. Furthermore, this owner owes me over $4K for bad check fees and unpaid wages, and to this day, I still do not have my money. She, however, found a relative to obtain a probationary license for a childcare center, and owns the new center, even though it's against WI DHFS rules. The center has children enrolled and my money is there. The owner is hiding from me.

After walking out of this director position due to not being paid, I found a nice center on the far west side that didn't fit my personality. I felt that I couldn't be myself.

Talk about pits and no peaches. And I will eat a peach before I touch a cherry.

And then....everything came full circle. The pits were replaced with a peach. A person warned me about my center director position, and I didn't listen to her. Now I work with her and she is the most amazing boss ever. She does more work compared to the director who refused to help me with the behavior issue. I've been at this new job for four months, but it feels longer. The staff is amazing, and the overall flow of the center is calm and welcoming.

The children I care for now are all going off to kindergarten. They are funny, lively, energetic and love to learn. Although there were some challenges, we bonded quickly. I will never forget the makeup running down my face when they made me laugh so hard I started crying.

A new school year starts tomorrow and a new class enters my purple room to learn and grow. My old class will have a piece of my heart just like other classes have had before them. My heart expands to these new friends, three of which are from my current class, some of whom I know, and a few I have yet to meet. Tonight I have to set my alarm clock early for the first day of craziness, new routines and new friends, also known as the first day of school.

Welcome to a new school year!
