Justice For Kenneka
Once again, winging blog topics this week. Totally out of comfort zone. Like black eye shadow worn as black eyeliner (yes, it can be done with an angle brush and a steady hand). I should try this more often.
As a Chicago girl (you can take me out of Chicago but you can't take the Chicago out of me) I embrace all things my city. Portillo's, Chicago sports teams (Cubs fan here), the Chicago series on NBC (future blog topic) and of course, the beautiful architecture. The things I cannot embrace are Rahm's politics, Toni Preckwinkle, and the senseless violence (listen to the song "Put The Guns Down" featuring King Louie, Common, and other Chicago rappers) .
This weekend, I heard about Kenneka Jenkins' passing and being found in hotel freezer. " 'A beautiful girl who took care of herself and never had a chance in life' ", were the thoughts of a person involved in the discussion. I watched the video last night that has made its rounds on social media where a "friend" of hers wearing sunglasses and looking into the camera is talking and smoking weed. Somewhere in the video, " 'help me' " is heard by a young woman in distress. Reports say that the voice in asking for help is Kenneka. In the beginning of the video, she is seen as a reflection in the sunglasses, and then I cannot see her again.
Another story making rounds is that her "friends" set her up to get raped and murdered. I have not seen documentation of this in the Chicago Tribune, and if this is true, then there is a whole another issue. Supposedly, the "friends" were upset with her, and rumor has it that $200 was made to hand over Kenneka's life. $200 could buy me a pair of boots.
The entire thing most likely has foul play written on it with a giant Sharpie. We are still trying to figure out what happened to Kenneka, however, we know that she didn't die alone or by choice. My own opinion is that she was drugged and raped, then wandered into the freezer unaware of her surroundings. If she had consumed anything, my guess is that she passed out in the freezer and never woke up. If what happened in the video was true and she was raped, surely someone could've saved her life.
Either way, Kenneka is gone. And she didn't deserve to die. Egocentrism is a Piaget theory of development that centers around the self. This is why very young children have difficulty with sharing and empathy. Because sharing and empathy are crucial social skills, it is important to teach both to young children as they set the foundation for personal relationships. According to Piaget, egocentrism as a whole disappears by the middle-childhood-early adolescents years. Egocentrism can also appear in young adulthood, thus manifesting itself in personal relationships and it's a normal part of development in Erickson's stages of conception through death.
What I can't figure out is why nobody bothered to protect Kenneka, and why her "friends" didn't help her. Perhaps they were still egocentric and never learned social skills appropriate for society. Either way, a young life was lost which they should be responsible for.
Miss Tereasa Martin, I am sorry for the loss of your daughter. My condolences to your family. Nothing will bring your daughter back, and if a crime was indeed committed, that everyone, from her friends to the hotel staff is held responsible.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
