The Animal's Mind
As I sit in my house and hear the fan while dinner cooks, a television playing in another room, and the clicks on my keyboard as I type this post, I look at my cats (Savannah and Violet) do "cat things", like looking out the window. If you don't live with cats, you won't understand the importance of windows throughout the year. Cats like movement and they love windows. Ever notice your cat near a window, or someone else's cat near a window? Enough said.
This post isn't about cats or windows, it's about animals. It's about the small furry lives we are responsible for. It's like having a kid in the house with four legs and fur instead of two legs. It's the love that we have, unconditionally, for something so small in non human form.
Animals are like people, and they have feelings. And this is why I cannot understand why people would want to harm something so loving, innocent and trusting.
This past week I have been busy-life in general, working a full and part time job. That explains why I haven't been posting much either. I have been reading, and a few stories that I read this week just broke my heart. Two of them resulted in pets that had been abused and killed, and the other involves a pair of beautiful Siberian Huskys left at a California dog park.
A Bradenton, FL man beat his girlfriend's ten-month-old puppy to death because the dog bit his finger. Toby, a beautiful pit bull, suffered fatal injuries. Puppies play bite because it's what they do. Puppies can be trained to not play bite, and sometimes puppies give "love bites", where they lick someone and follow it with a gentle bite. My cat Nala used to do that.
Ollie, the pit bull, who captured viral attention after being stabbed fifty times and left for dead in a suitcase, died last Thursday as a result of his injuries. He was found after a pedestrian heard his cries, and I guess God needed an angel, so he took Ollie. Today, I read a story about Siberian Husky sisters left with a note and toys in a dog park in CA.
What goes through the animal's mind when things like this happen? I can't begin to imagine their minds as the abuse starts and ends. What goes through the abuser's mind and what makes them want to hurt and continue to hurt an animal?
Animal abuse is a real situation and a sad one. I remember dating this guy when I was younger and his roommate had a pitbull who was made to lay in a cage all day. This dog was so little, innocent and trusting. I didn't say anything to the guy at the time, nor did I call animal welfare, because I didn't think it was my place. As I read these dog abuse stories, I think about that little face in the corner of the room pleading with me to help him.
And I wish I would've called about this dog. The guy I was dating was a jerk, and so was his friend for that matter.
If you wouldn't hurt a human being, why hurt an animal? If you wouldn't hurt an animal, why hurt a human being? Animals and people shouldn't be abused, because both are similar in many ways. Both are capable of mistakes, yet both are capable of unconditional love. There is more love than mistakes in the world.
Toby and Ollie, I can't even begin to imagine what you went through when you were abused. Neither one of you deserved to die, and I hope both of you know how loved you were by everyone.
Purses and shoes, plus jewelry are accessories. Matching towels and bedding are home accessories. Animals are not accessories. They are love that lasts their lifetime and beyond.
