So I'm sitting in Panera drinking coffee and attempting to work on my rough draft of my novel. Opera music playing in my headphones and a slight headache from going to bed late, I started writing and realized I needed to post the blog, so I'm calling it case of writers block. Writing a novel isn't as easy as it looks.
Today's topic is a heartbreaking and horrific story from Manhattan, where a nanny killed two of her charges. The nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, worked as a nanny for Kevin and Marina Krim, caring for their children. Something was going on with the nanny, who apparently showed no signs of stress. On that horrific night in October 2012, Marina Krim returned home with one of the children to find Lucia, 6, and Leo, 2, found dead in the bathtub. The nanny attempted to kill herself. Kevin Krim who was returning to Manhattan from a work trip, had numerous calls from his frantic wife. He returned home to find the same grisly scene that is every parent's worse nightmare.
Two of their children were dead. The person they trusted most to care for them was responsible. A family without their children and a sibling without a brother and sister. This event was beyond shocking and a sting to the nanny profession. As my friend Dominique stated when her son was a baby, she confided in me that she was terrified of finding childcare for him because of the news stories where childcare center staff and nannies harm and/or abuse the children in their care. Overall, this story and stories like this make the early childhood education and nanny professions look questionable, largely because of one nanny's actions.
Working with children is not easy. It's more exhausting than it looks. I know, because I teach full time. Is it stressful? It can be, for a variety of reasons.
When families see stories like this, it makes them not want to hire nannies and/or place their children in childcare centers. Situations like this create the illusion that having nannies and children in childcare centers is not safe. There are reasons why this nanny fatally harmed these children, yet we may never know what those reasons are.
My hope is that the Krim family finds their peace and eventually be able to put their lives back together. The justice for this nanny is a step in that direction, along with sentencing. Neither will bring their children back, yet they can rest a little bit now that this horrifying trial is at rest.
"You two never made it to the top but I'm up here now for the first time, in peace, on top of the world, remembering another lifetime and thinking of you," she wrote. "NYC, Lulu and Leo loved you and I love you too!"
